Title:Main Title: Analysis of spatio-temporal patterns of CO2 and H2O fluxes in crop fields
Description:Abstract: Understanding the spatio-temporal variability of gas exchange of CO2 and water vapour at field level is necessary for accurate simulation of crop growth in fields with heterogeneous growing conditions and for parameterizing soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer (SVAT) models. Accordingly, relationships between the spatio-temporal patterns of assimilation and transpiration rates and environmental (e.g. soil) heterogeneity are of specific interest. Therefore, gas-exchange was measured at different points in winter wheat and sugar beet fields both at leaf and at canopy level in a nearly biweekly cycle during the growing seasons 2010 and 2011. The results revealed a strong spatial heterogeneity of carbon and water canopy fluxes across the fields. While canopy measurements had a temporal variability with distinct diurnal and seasonal patterns, within the fields and between the crops, the temporal (and spatial) variability of leaf level photosynthesis and transpiration was comparably small. Our results indicate that it is important to consider field heterogeneity for parameterizing large-scale SVAT models.
