Title:Main Title: TR32DB: A project database to manage research data of an interdisciplinary, long-term research project
Description:Abstract: This poster presents the TR32DB project database (www.tr32db.de). The TR32DB is set up within the framework of the ‘Transregio Collaborative Research Centre 32’ (CRC/TR32), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The TR32DB has been operating online since early 2008 and handles all data with corresponding metadata, created by the involved project participants. This includes data collected from several disciplines like soil and plant science, geography, meteorology or geophysics. Besides data, created in several field measurement campaigns, meteorological monitoring, as well as airborne remote sensing measurements, also data resulting from the laboratory or modelling results are considered. In addition, research results of project participants like publications, conference presentations, pictures or PhD reports are regarded. The self-designed TR32DB system is set-up in cooperation and also hosted in the hardware environment of the Regional Computing Centre Cologne (RRZK). Main components of the architecture involve: (i) a data storage including backup, (ii) a data-base for administrative purposes and metadata storage, as well as (iii) a web-interface for user access. The TR32DB supports all common features of RDM systems like: data upload, a user friendly metadata input-wizard, data search, data download, as well as allocation of DOIs. In addition, several web mapping components are supported. To document all involved TR32DB data with accurate metadata, a specific TR32DB Metadata Schema was designed and implemented. It is arranged in a multi-level approach combining several metadata schemas and standards (e.g. Dublin Core, ISO 19115, DataCite). In addition, metadata properties corresponding to the TR32DB data types (e.g. data, geodata, publications) can be complemented. The schema specifies a core set of mandatory, optional, as well as automatic metadata properties. A mapping to applied metadata standards is provided in the documentation of the schema. Overall, the TR32DB is designed according to the demands and needs of the project participants (e.g. huge amount of heterogeneous data) and the DFG. The system is set up in the available hardware infrastructure of the RRZK, which ensures the access to the data after the end of the CRC/TR32 project funding. The self-designed, interoperable metadata schema allows the accurate description of all heterogeneous CRC/TR32 data.
