Description(s):Abstract: The exchange of latent and sensible heat between soil and atmosphere drives weather and climate. Land surface models calculate water and energy fluxes between land surface and atmosphere, representing the lower boundary condition for atmospheric models. Modeled processes in land surface models are of physical and biogeochemical nature, highly complex in terms of parameterization, heterogeneous in space and time, and economically expensive to observe in the field over continuous time scales. One general strategy to improve atmospheric model predictions is to improve this lower boundary condition by a better representation of water and energy fluxes at the land surface.
