| Descriptions: | Abstract: Interdisciplinary research approaches have to run integrative data analyses to realize their full potential. In biodiversity research, the range of relevant disciplines is large, comprising for instance point related genetical analysis, meteorologists covering three-dimensional energy fluxes, and ecologist working on a landscape level. Each discipline employs specific file formats, data syntax, and concepts or terminology, rendering a joint analysis challenging. A successful central data management must be able to harmonize data across disciplines. A necessary condition is the appropriate annotation of primary data with metadata. A sufficient condition is the formalization of the implicit knowledge about data, its semantics. This paper outlines a framework enabling a knowledge-based data and tool access within the Biodiversity Exploratory Information System (BExIS). We address the problem of semantic heterogeneity within the data sets by relating all data items to concepts of a common, upper-level ontology which reflects the relationships between individual ecological topics. The framework’s service oriented architecture allows for seamless integration of external data sources and analysis tools. We describe the idea of ontologybased data and tool access, the framework concept and its service-oriented architecture as well as the process of semantic registration of data, and provide some details on our implementation as well as a discussion of first experiences with this framework.
