Title:Main Title: Advances and limitations in electromagnetic induction
Description:Abstract: Electromagnetic induction (EMI) systems operate under the low induction number (LIN) approximation that converts the measured magnetic field into an apparent electrical conductivity (ECa). In general, the recorded ECa values are used to characterize the shallow subsurface while any external current conducting media influence the measurements and cause a shift in the recorded ECa, which hinders a quantitative interpretation. To obtain accurate EMI data, we propose a new conversion method, investigate some external influences and show how to calibrate the measurements. The correct ECa conversion (CEC) accurately transfers the magnetic field ratios into ECa, while the LIN based conversion performs inaccurate. Hence, CEC is the preferred method. We show that the operator and/or the field setup strongly influence the measurements (data shifts up to 10 mS/m) and we show that the calibration performs only when the ECa data range along a calibration line exceeds at least 1.5 mS/m and when the electrical conductivity of the ground is larger than 5 mS/m. Incorporation of the conversion tool into computing solutions or possibly into measurement systems enhances accuracy, the recognition of the data shifts lead to better subsurface characterizations and the calibration enables quantitative statements about the research area. Hence, the presented procedures obtain more reliable EMI data compared to simply measured ones and will advance the EMI method.
