Description(s):Abstract: Microwave brightness temperature measurements in space have a long history. High-frequency channels like 89 and 150 GHz have been carried onboard satellites for several decades. The United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has been maintaining polar-orbiting satellites with the high-frequency Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-B (AMSU-B) and, later, Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) microwave instruments continuously since 1979. The Metop program by the European Space Agency (ESA) carries the MHS instrument and was started in 2006 with the Metop-A satellite, whereas Metop-B followed in 2012.
