Title:Main Title: Comparison of measured soil surface temperetures and bare soil evaporation rates with simulations by the coupled water and energy transport model HYDRUS-1D
Description:Abstract: A numerical model, implemented in the Hydrus-1D program, that considers the coupling of liquid water flow and heat transport in soils through the water vapor movement is tested on its ability to accurately simulate both soil surface temperatures and evaporation rates. The model uses the surface water balance and the surface energy balance to provide the boundary conditions at the soil surface to solve the liquid water, water vapor and heat transport equations. The simulated temperatures and evaporations in this thesis research did not correctly predict the measured soil temperatures and evaporations. The model overestimated the amplitude of the temperature variations (measured at two different depths) and simulated cumulative values of the actual evaporation were much smaller than the measured cumulative evaporation. In this respect, another choice of soil surface resistance model could lead to better agreement between modelled and measured temperatures and evaporation. Because the model uses the surface energy balance to provide upper boundary conditions, the simulated potential evaporation showed different values for different soil types.
