Description(s):Abstract: The ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model is derived from data of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER). The methodology used to produce the first ASTER Global Digital Elevation Model (GDEM1) involved automated processing of the entire 1.5-million-scene ASTER archive, including stereocorrelation to produce 1,264,118 individual scene-based ASTER DEMs, cloud masking to remove cloudy pixels, stacking all scene-based DEMs, removing residual bad values and outliers, averaging selected data to create final pixel values, and then correcting residual anomalies before partitioning the data into 1°-by-1° tiles. A second version of the ASTER GDEM (GDEM2) was released mid-October 2011, which yields higher spatial resolution and improves water masking and coverage by acquiring 260.000 additional scenes, which were added to the above mentioned process. As with the GDEM1, the GDEM2 validation was performed by the U.S. and Japanese partners. Vertical accuracy assessments included a comparison of the GDEM2 against absolute geodetic references over the Conterminous US (CONUS), against national elevation grids over the US and Japan, against the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 1 arc-second elevation grids over the US and 20 sites around the globe, and against space borne laser altimeter data globally. Horizontal accuracy assessments were conducted as part of the Japan and the global SRTM studies, and horizontal resolution studies were conducted in both Japan and the US. The ASTER GDEM2 (and GDEM1) is being distributed by METI and NASA through the Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC) and the NASA Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) at no charge to users worldwide as a contribution to the Global Earth Observing System of Systems (GEOSS). It is packaged in 1°-by-1° tiles, and covers land surfaces between 83°N and 83°S with estimated accuracies of 17 meters at 95 % confidence for vertical data and 30 meters at 95 % confidence for horizontal data. The ASTER GDEM is in GeoTIFF format with geographic lat/long coordinates and a 1 arc-second (30m) grid.
