Title:Main Title: Quantifying and modeling spatio-temporal crop growth variability at field scale
Description:Abstract: Spatial and temporal variability of crop growth within fields is crucial for estimating yield and optimizing management using crop modeling approaches. Spatial variability is seldom considered in simulating crop growth due to a lack of high resolution soil data (Batchelor et al, 2002; Hu and Mo, 2011). Near surface geophysical methods, such as electromagnetic induction (EMI), can be utilized to fill this data gap. Many studies investigated the relationship between ECa (apparent soil electrical conductivity) and crop yield but no consistent statistical relationship could be found (e.g. Jaynes et al., 2005; Corwin et al., 2003). The purpose of this study was to correlate different crop characteristics (LAI, biomass, height) with ECa to understand whether these relationships are also inconsistent and to investigate which factors are influencing crop growth patterns at field scale using an ecophysiological crop growth model.
